Zhu Yanji, Attending Ophthalmologist, MD, PhD, Ophthalmology Department, Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University
I primarily engaged in scientific research and clinical work related to neovascular diseases of the ocular fundus. My research focuses on the mechanisms of inflammation and oxidative stress in the formation of neovascularization in the ocular fundus, as well as the evaluation of related drug efficacy. As the first author, I have published four SCI papers in journals such as Immunity and two papers in Chinese core journals. I have presided over one research project funded by the municipal science and technology commission and one youth fund project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. As a participant, I completed the research project titled "Basic Research and Surgical Technique Advancements in Visual Rehabilitation for Diabetic Retinopathy," which was awarded the second prize of the Shanghai Rehabilitation Medicine Science and Technology Award in 2019.
The Ophthalmology Department of Ruijin Hospital was established in 1949. Under the leadership of successive department heads, including Professor Nie Chuanxian, Professor Li Jingting, Professor Chen Binfu, and Professor Wang Kangsun, the department has achieved rapid development. It has gained national recognition in certain fields such as intraocular foreign body localization and removal, and ophthalmic laser treatments. Building on the outstanding contributions of its predecessors, the ophthalmologists at Ruijin Hospital have worked tirelessly to establish a comprehensive ophthalmology department with complete sub-specialties, including cataract, glaucoma, ocular fundus diseases, vitreoretinal diseases, oculoplastic and orbital diseases, ocular trauma, strabismus and amblyopia, optometry, ocular surface diseases, neuro-ophthalmology, and uveal diseases.
In terms of research, the Ophthalmology Department of Ruijin Hospital has recently presided over 11 national-level projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 6 key projects funded by the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, 2 projects funded by the Shanghai Natural Science Foundation, 1 Shanghai Science and Technology Rising Star project, 6 projects funded by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and 5 projects funded by the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau. The department has also won 2 third-prize awards for Shanghai Science and Technology Progress, 2 Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Awards, and 1 Shanghai Rehabilitation Medicine Science and Technology Award. In 2008, along with the ophthalmology departments of the Ninth People's Hospital and Xinhua Hospital, it became a key discipline of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. Currently, the department serves as a standardized training base for resident doctors and rotating doctors in Shanghai, and ranks among the top five ophthalmology departments in the city.
