After more than 25 years of cooperation, the Zhongshan Ophthalmology Center(ZOC) of Sun Yat-sen University and the School of Optometry of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University(SO PolyU) will open a new chapter of collaboration.
On December 8, 2023, Professor Gao Song, President of Sun Yat-sen University, led a delegation to visit the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Professor Lin Haotian, the Director of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, also attended the exchange meeting. During the meeting, ZOC and the SO PolyU outlined their future collaboration intentions.
On January 12, 2024, Professor Kee Chea-su, Head of SO PolyU, and George Woo, Emeritus Professor of SO PolyU, were invited to visit ZOC. The symposium, attended by Professor Lin Haotian, Professor Yu Minbin, Professor Liang Lingyi, and Professor Zeng Junwen, facilitated an in-depth discussion on cooperation opportunities within the optometry profession in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The two sides will host a wide range of activities to further deepen their cooperative relationship.
【History】
In 1997, the establishment of the Department of Optometry of Sun Yat-sen University received technical support and assistance from SO PolyU. Over the years, Professor George Woo and several other professors from SO PolyU have consistently delivered lectures at ZOC, actively contributing to the construction and development of the Optometry Department.
Simultaneously, as China's largest ophthalmology hospital, ZOC has effectively leveraged its ophthalmology teaching resources to help SO polyU. Since 1998, ZOC has served as an ophthalmology internship hospital for SO PolyU students. Moreover, both institutions have undertaken various high-level exchange activities, including the mutual appointment of visiting professors, reciprocal visits, and participation in international academic seminars.
【Prospects】
During this exchange meeting, Professor Lin Haotian presented an overview of the prospects for technology-empowered digital hospitals. He proposed further collaboration to establish an innovative composite optometry major, representing a new frontier in medical disciplines. This endeavor aims to significantly contribute to the advancement of optometry education and the promotion of innovative technology within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The joint objective is to build a medical-engineering talent cultivation project, emphasizing interdisciplinary integration and the intersection of medicine and engineering as a catalyst for scientific and technological innovation cooperation.
Professor Kee Chea-su said at the meeting that this visit was his first visit to the ZOC since he assumed the post of Head of SO PolyU in 2023 July. Professor Kee made a special introduction about the teaching, scientific research, discipline development, and future plans of SO PolyU. He hoped that both sides would continue to cooperate in depth, achieve win-win cooperation, and promote the integration of optometry and engineering technologies, which could lead to the development of optics.
The participants engaged in comprehensive discussions during the meeting, focusing on cooperation in teaching and discipline integration. Both sides reached an agreement to intensify and broaden their collaboration in the future through diverse channels, aiming at enhancing the professional capabilities and overall quality of optometry training, which serve the needs of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
